Real Madrid made several key changes to their starting line-up knowing that they had already progressed to the knockout round of the Champions League.

Christiano Ronaldo was given some much deserved rest, Varane started the game in defense. Sahin also started the game, Jose Maria Callejon who has seen very little playing time also made a start.

Higuain and Benzema both started the game for Real Madrid which was a very rare occurrence.

Madrid got off to a flying start when Karim Benzema scored in the 2nd minute of the game, the pass was provided by Mesut Ozil.

The lead was doubled in the 6th minute when José Callejón scored for Real Madrid, it was the opening goal scorer in Benzema who turned provider.

The lead was trebled in the 9th minute when Gonzalo Higuaín scored from a very difficult angle, the assist was provided by Lass Diarra.

Real Madrid went 4-0 up in the 20th minute when Mesut Ozil netted a fine goal. The game was well and truly over in the opening half of the game.

No more goals were scored in the first-half, Real Madrid went into the break leading 4-0. The fringe players had proved what they are made up of.

Jose Callejon added another goal in the 49th minute, Raphael Varane provided the player with the assist.

Benzema scored the 6th goal for Real Madrid in the 66th minute, it was his second of the game.

Zagreb pulled two goals back in the dying minutes of the game and the game ended 6-2, it was a great attacking display from the home team.
